Browser-based RPG/Strategy

Estimated time: 100 hours

In progress. A browser-based game using JavaScript and SVG/Canvas to render the action in an online world. Think RPG/Team Strategy: X-Com, Final Fantasy Tactics, Jagged Alliance. It's a squad-based MMO. With a social twist...

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone for expressing interest. Please note that I am reviewing the submissions and will be getting back to you soon. Thank you for your patience.

Description

Well the story of the game takes place in the not so distant future, in a large, metropolitan, city. Originally this was Montreal, which is where I am: a port/university town/island with social unrest.

The player travels from location to location at first, in an immediate area, then on a cross-province/state level and into a wild guerrilla warfare sort in South-American jungles, Deserts and beyond.

And warfare is only one of the main occupations.

I'd like to share more, perhaps you'd like to join the project and find out.

Technologies and Roles

The technologies, in order if immediacy:

  • Python
  • Client-side coding in JavaScript
  • Something like Comet

Also, there are other responsibilities. If you are interested in these or know someone who might be, please don't hesitate. They are major parts of the project.

  • Creative writer
  • Illustrator (dare I ask, one that enjoyed Cowboy Bebop and the games mentioned above)
  • Music: lead spilth
  • Marketing
  • Sales

Tasks

This project has started.

I think we can breakdown the project this way:

  • First, establish a set of key features for a first release and build a schedule
  • Communicate these features to the other members (see Technologies and Roles, above)
  • Work to meet at intervals and integrate the created content with the engine.
  • In the last stretch, the development team sets up a functional site w/Blog, Feeds (of all kinds), Multiple contributors. In other words, Wordpress.
  • Finally, everyone markets the product. Invite friends, tell relatives, join groups and just spread the words.
  • Work on getting an investment.

Tools

Anything that serves the teams purpose. I'm on Ubuntu and Skype. We could use Google Docs and a Wiki for exchange of info. Code and content are store on a rented subversion server and developed on local machines. Keep it in the cloud.

... with backups.

These are just suggestions. Head over to the "Collaboration tools and tips" section for more ideas.

  • If you want to do the project live (vs each working at different times), say over chat:
  • For simple scripts:
  • For slightly larger projects:
    • Here's a Google Code repository for versioning. We can also use the Wiki to share ideas. Tell me which email to use to add you as a member.

Are you planning to open source this?

To offer this project under an open source license would have to be a team decision. I would like to see everyone working on this to be well rewarded for their effort.

Thanks for the research :)

I love this idea.. maybe I can start contributing once all my other side projects are complete.
